Meet the Kindness Crew, Rockford Lutheran’s Jr/Sr High student organization responsible for spreading joy and encouragement throughout Rockford Lutheran School and the community! The Kindness Crew was founded in 2018 by Jen LaPier, Jr/Sr High Medical Clerk. Since that time, student membership has grown to 44 students ranging from grades 6-12.  Check out the photo album of the Kindness Crew in Action!

The Kindness Crew supports Rockford Lutheran School’s CORE Value of service, teaching students the importance of giving back. Furthermore, it encourages positive peer relationships and fosters critical leadership skills. Students meet regularly, either in person, by Zoom, or by email, to discuss and organize service events throughout the year. Some of these service events include:

  • Teddy Bear Drive for Local Hospitals (October)
  • World Kindness Day (November 13)
  • Random Act of Kindness Day (February 17)
  • Operation Shoebox (November)
  • Clothing Drive (November / December)
  • Teacher / Staff Appreciation (December & May)

Most recently, the Kindness Crew collected (4) large bags of stuffed animals during its annual Teddy Bear Drive in October. The stuffed animals were donated to Swedish American Hospital to benefit children needing comfort during the Holiday season. This week, in celebration of World Kindness Day on November 13, the Kindness Crew decorated over 400 student lockers at the Jr/Sr High School with personal notes of kindness encouragement, and inspiration. They also wrote hand-written cards to their teachers.

While the Kindness Crew teaches the importance of being good stewards, students also gain personal satisfaction from doing good deeds for others. Below are a what several students said about joining the Kindness Crew and what it means to them:

“This Club means so much to me! It is so amazing to be a part of a Club for 2 years that works hard to serve others and do so much within our school and community. Even through the pandemic, we still found ways to serve and brighten people’s days.”

“I joined the Club 2 years ago because my fav (Mrs. LaPier) was in charge and I loved the idea of being able to do little kind gestures. This Club meant a lot because it truly brightened people’s days and I love seeing people happy. 😊

“I decided to join last year because it sounded interesting and like something I would do. I always am wanting to help out whenever I can. Kindness Crew felt like a way I could participate in service through school. I knew with covid it would be different than normal, but it was still fun. I am excited for next year.”

“I have been in the Club for 2 years and I love it! I love doing things for other people to make them happy. Everyone deserves to be happy, even if it’s just the little things like a quote or a homemade gift. My reason to join this Club is to make a difference to the community in a positive way. Also, to build my leadership skills.”

“I joined this Club because I wanted to find new opportunities to help out not only our school but our community and our Club did just that. Not only was I able to help my community, but I was able to meet more people who shared common interests! I was able to meet my close friend through this Club and I wouldn’t trade our friendship for the world! I am beyond thankful for this Club!”

The Kindness Crew’s acts of kindness will continue throughout the year. Jen Lapier said, “A little act of kindness goes a long way! I am so glad the Kindness Crew is able to bring some joy to all at Rockford Lutheran and our community.”
