Visual Arts at a Glance

Elementary Art

In our elementary art program, we integrate creativity and faith. Students study the elements of art, various styles, and worldwide art while learning a range of techniques through drawing, painting, and other media. Emphasis is placed on problem-solving and creative thinking, encouraging students to develop independence. We highlight that they are creative children of God.

Junior High Art - Explorations

6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Explorations (9 weeks)
This is a series of preparatory art classes designed to develop artistic abilities. The course content will introduce and develop skills and knowledge in the areas of Art History, Art criticism, design concepts, art production and art careers. A sketchbook requiring drawing, writing, and idea development will be required for this course.

High School Art - Art I, II, III, IV

This progressive program allows students to grow in their knowledge and application of art skills and principles. Beginning in 9th grade, students can naturally make their way through Intro to Visual Art, Dimensional Art and Design, and the building of their Art Portfolio.

Applied Art: 2D Studio

To accommodate students who have demonstrated a strong interest and commitment to excellence in computer-generated artwork, we offer a year-long advanced course.  Under careful guidance, students create within and explore the world of CGI art.

Art Club

RLS Fine Arts Department boasts a healthy and growing Art Club. With numbers steadily rising above 50 members, meetings are bursting with creativity and fun. In after-school meetings, members create logos and artwork for school merchandise; craft jewelry, lures, ceramics, and other mediums for fundraising goals; all while building a strong community of artistic-minded individuals.

Art Instructors

Mrs. Cheri Schmid - Early Childhood and Elementary Art

Mrs. Schmid graduated from Baylor University with a BFA in Studio Art and is certified to teach K-12. She absolutely loves helping kids discover their creativity, reminding them that they are wonderfully made children of God. Her classroom is a place where students get to explore their artistic side, learn new techniques, and express themselves freely. When Mrs. Schmid is not teaching, you can usually find her spending time with her family, crocheting, exploring national parks, or hanging out with her dogs. Mrs. Schmid's faith is a big part of who she is and shapes how she teaches, creating an environment where students feel encouraged, loved, and ready to embrace their God-given talents.
