OUR COMMITMENT TO SERVICE AS A CORE SCHOOL VALUE

"You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love."
Galatians 5:13, NIV

Rockford Lutheran does not have a required number of service hours. Instead, we focus on inspiring our students to regularly serve in our school and community, translating into lifelong serving leaders who will continue to add value to our world. Students work together on various service projects from Kindergarten on up. Many of these are student-selected and, as appropriate, student-led.

In high school, the Freshmen and Sophomores are taught the meaning and values of Christian service. They must participate in service projects while reflecting on their experiences and learning about their neighbors, whom they are called to serve.  The Juniors and Seniors learn to identify needs and craft meaningful ways to meet those needs through Christian Service Projects, which they lead and recruit other students to join in on.  We celebrate that, on average, our students graduate with more than 80 hours of service by the time they graduate.

CORE Values In & Beyond the Classroom – Service

“A little act of kindness goes a long way! I am so glad the Kindness Crew can bring joy to all at Rockford Lutheran and our community.”

Jen Lapier

Faculty Sponsor for Kindness Crew

Meet the Kindness Crew, Rockford Lutheran’s Jr/Sr High student organization responsible for spreading joy and encouragement throughout Rockford Lutheran School and the community! The Kindness Crew was founded in 2018 by Jen LaPier, Jr/Sr High Medical Clerk. Since then, student membership has grown to 44 students from grades 6-12.

The Kindness Crew supports Rockford Lutheran School’s CORE Value of service, teaching students the importance of giving back. Furthermore, it encourages positive peer relationships and fosters critical leadership skills. Students meet regularly in person, by Zoom, or by email to discuss and organize service events throughout the year. Some of these service events include:

  • Teddy Bear Drive for Local Hospitals (October)
  • World Kindness Day (November 13)
  • Random Act of Kindness Day (February 17)
  • Operation Shoebox (November)
  • Clothing Drive (November / December)
  • Teacher / Staff Appreciation (December & May)

Recently, the Kindness Crew collected (4) large bags of stuffed animals during its annual Teddy Bear Drive in October. The stuffed animals were donated to the Swedish American Hospital to benefit children needing comfort during the Holiday season. This week, in celebration of World Kindness Day on November 13, the Kindness Crew decorated over 400 student lockers at the Jr/Sr High School with personal notes of kindness, encouragement, and inspiration. They also wrote hand-written cards to their teachers.
