Academics at the Elementary

Rockford Lutheran Elementary is where all students can find academic challenges and perform to their potential. A rigorous but accessible educational program, coupled with additional support, means that all students can advance beyond the growth that students would typically experience in an academic year.

  • Students are grouped according to academic evaluation, and their curriculum is adjusted to allow for individual success in reading, math, and language arts. Teachers provide personal learning experiences so that children with various learning styles and academic prowess are all challenged appropriately.
  • Techniques in problem-solving are emphasized in all areas of learning.
  • Implementation of hands-on science at every level with emphasis on experimentation and inquiry.
  • Technology is viewed as a tool that helps students achieve academic goals. Computers in our computer lab and classrooms, smart boards, and document cameras allow for technology enhancement to our curriculum. Chromebooks and iPads are available for student use.

Academic Assessment testing using Common Core Standards measured against nationally normed data for comparison of performance, growth and grade level expectations progress (using NWEA MAP and/or Renaissance STAR platforms) is used to help individualize academic goals and adjust instruction for maximum success.

Our curriculum also interweaves a host of enrichment opportunities, often called the “specials” periods, where student explore their other areas of learning and growth through activities, labs, and the arts.

  • Students begin learning Spanish in Pre-School and continue through fifth grade.
  • A complete library and librarian help students grow in reading skills and provide instruction in proper research.
  • Music, Art, and Drama are offered at all grade levels.
    • Band and orchestra are offered in 3rd through 5th grade.
    • Concerts, programs, and events allow students to share their learning with families and friends.
  • Science explorations are enriched through the use of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum for elementary grades, bringing integrations of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programming and activities.

The most compelling reason we can give any family to send their child to Rockford Lutheran Elementary is the success of students who begin their academic lives here, many of whom have gone on to Rockford Lutheran Junior and Senior High School.

Academy students average two to three grade levels above national and state averages.

Small classes provide each Elementary student with individualized attention from our faculty of gifted teachers.
