What You Need to Know About the “Invest in Kids” Tax Credit Scholarship

Through the “Invest in Kids Act,” Illinois children enrolled in private schools will have access to new scholarships. The scholarships offered through this program could cover 50 to 100 percent of tuition and eligible charges for next school year. Below is more information about how to apply, and if your family is eligible to receive a scholarship.

Tax credit scholarships: Students grades K-12 have the opportunity to receive tax credit scholarships in the 2018/2019 school year.

Application process: Applicants to the Scholarship Program are encouraged by Rockford Lutheran to apply to Empower Illinois.  Their website is http://www.empowerillinois.org and they will begin accepting applications Jan. 31 2018 at Noon.

Help applying: You can get help applying for the scholarship in person at a variety of events in your community in the coming months. We will share the dates and locations of these events as we know more.

Application Information:  Rockford Lutheran has chosen to work with the Scholorship Granting Organization (SGO) Empower Illinois. Scholarships will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis starting January 31, 2018 at Noon, so it is very important that you apply early.  Please read this Application Checklist to prepare for the application process on Jan. 31st.

Application Check List

  •  A copy of your family’s 2016 federal tax return. If the family did not file a 2016 tax return
  • Proof of Illinois residency, such as: 
    • Current driver license
    • Current Utility Bill
  • Documentation of the student’s age, such as: 
    • A copy of the student’s birth certificate
    • Federal or State ID
    • A Passport
  • The student’s prior semester report card (unless beginning school for the first time)

How to qualify: Eligibility to receive a scholarship is based on your family’s household income. For example, you could receive a tax credit scholarship if you make less than $73,800 a year as a family of four.

Scholarship amount: Your family could receive a scholarship that covers 50 to 100 percent of tuition and eligible charges for next school year. Students who have defined special needs, are English Language Learners, or are classified as Gifted and Talented could receive a higher scholarship amount.
